Intimacy is defined as closeness that is cozy and relaxing, between two people or an individual and God. It’s more of emotional connection and supportive sharability that includes feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

Experiencing God’s closeness is not about His distance from us, but more of an actual trust we have in Him. Being able to confidently say that you trust someone, means that, you’re close to them and can rely on them too.

Psalm 73:28”But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;  I will tell of all your deeds.”

Intimacy is only possible when there’s unhindered access

Allowing yourself to be vulnerable and fully exposed with no secrets may seem uncomfortable. But that openness is what increases the capacity for the other person to better understand, accept, and care for you. The same applies to God.

We cannot withhold back our brokenness and wounds, hurt alone yet expect to feel secure. We have to let go of individualism and secrecy to increase intimacy both in our relationship as humans and personal relationship with God.

As long as we still hold back some aspects of our lives – we will never get to understand or fully partake of God’s love. You and I have to come up to the place where we realize that if we do have an intimate personal relationship with God, then whatever problems life has to offer, God will not let us face them alone.

He wants the whole part of us, not just a portion. He yearns for us to open and pour out the deep ugly secrets that are trapping us in shame and guilt. And ask Him to control our lives.

Only then, after opening up, will He come to us in a mighty way and light us up with His Glory. Only then will we get empowered, have assurance on life matters, gain the courage to face sorrows and trouble, and most of all find the peace that drives out fear.

So, How do we cultivate this intimacy with God?

  • Be Truthful with God

Deceit and denial are the main roadblocks that hinder our access to the deeper experiences of God and His plans for us.

The journey towards cultivating this intimacy starts with you being honest. Share your thoughts, attitudes, bitterness, fear, guilt, doubts and lay it all as it is before God in prayer.

Don’t pray as if you are addressing a powerful head of state. Instead, come to Him as you would go to a friend that doesn’t criticize, neither judge you. Don’t resist telling Him of the past painful experiences of your life. As hard as it seems, confess it all to Him – our God has feelings too. So, He is interested in your hardest most concealed

  • Come to terms with your past

Accept that it happened and quit resisting the embarrassment. Maybe someone took advantage of you. Or, through your journey growing up – you faced certain struggles. Emotionally exploited, to a point you felt too weak.

Today, when you look at your past, see it as a memory that has helped you perceive of your vulnerability. Understand that everyone around you, both friends, family, and strangers – all have their imperfections.

This way, your desire will be prioritized on God – who is perfect with zero flaws.

Psalm 22:24 – “For He has not despised nor detested the suffering of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He listened.”

The empathy characteristic of God is revealed when we are vulnerable.

  • Trust God and learn to heed His word

One time when Jesus was being tempted by the devil in the wilderness, The Word of God was all He stood on. He trusted God’s Word, at one point He said “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of The Lord”.

God’s word empowers us. It reassures us and gives us the courage to do anything and everything!

Don’t just spend time reading your Bible. Do what it tells you. Sometimes it will rebuke you, take heed! Respond to the Word as it is, without manipulating it to fit your situation. That obedience to God’s word is the proof that we have intimacy with Him.

His word changes our lives. It transforms how we make decisions and the choices we allow in our lives. After some time we can reflect back and see how far we have evolved and become better. We also get to see how close we’ve drawn to Him.

Psalm 112:7 – “They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

Psalm 37:5 – ”Commit your way to the Lord; Trust in Him also and He will do it.”

1 John 2:5 – ”But whoever habitually keeps His word and obeys His precepts (and treasures His message in its entirety), in him the love of God has truly been perfected (it is completed and has reached maturity). By this, we know (for certain) that we are in Him”
