Picture this. You are competent and you do enjoy your work. But somehow, you struggle with the senses that cause you to feel as if you’re unqualified to be in that position at work and all your successes are as a result of mere luck.

The Imposter Syndrome is synonymous with the Inferiority Complex, even though the former is more used in reference to business environments.

This syndrome can easily be explained as a situation where you as a person feel like you will get discovered, exposed, and confronted as a fraud. You think your experience at work and what you do is not enough towards addressing the issues or needs you are employed to handle.

Imposter Syndrome is a serious issue that most people battle with – unknowingly. Yet, it’s just, but an illusion.

Imposter Syndrome tends to affect people with tendencies of being perfectionists. It’s noticed in a form of anxiety before and during work, to a point you feel the urge to quit.

Most of this is due to a lack of “sense of belonging”. You don’t fit in with the rest of your team, your level of expertise seems lacking, at least unto you, etc

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

1. Socialize

Positive and meaningful social relationships are one way towards resolving the Imposter syndrome at work.

Find time to sit, talk, and eat together with people that are your workmates or outsiders that have an understanding of your work. This simple interaction when done regularly creates a connection between your work peers, and it gives you that sense of belonging.

Avoid phone conversation and TV when socializing with these people, let your brain be fully involved in the conversation.

2. Self Confidence + Self Esteem

Self Confidence – How you feel about your ability to handle the task at hand. “Can I do it, even when others say I cannot?”

Self Esteem – How others feel about your ability on something.

The two components help retrain your brain to open up on the honest capabilities you possess. In that way, you won’t have to push anything to prove yourself. And should the Imposter Syndrome try to creep back; you know your qualification and how to shut it down when it lies to you that you are unqualified.

You’ll come across team members that don’t want you in the room, yet they need you. But if you don’t have self-confidence and self-esteem, you’ll walk away and lose it all. So please, know that you can even when you are told you cannot!

3. Practise different sets

Diversifying your area of expertise gives you options to strategize better. Don’t approach everything from the same direction

For instance, if you wanted to express your care towards a person, maybe presenting flowers can do that, or a hug, or a letter note, or visiting and sitting by their side till they open up and gain the courage to navigate through their issue.

All these are different sets but they communicate care. Likewise at your workplace, pooling ideas from different perspectives of a matter, make it easier to address and deliver successful results on the same
